Early Intervention Growth Guidance
Growth Guidance, Biobloc Appliances, and the Tropic Premise
“Why do so many kids have tooth crowding, and what can I do to prevent this in my own kids?”
"How will my kids' teeth fit in their head?"
The Orthotropic school of thought addresses the “why?” behind tooth crowding and facial growth.
It is based on the concept that our oral habits modify our genetic growth potential.
Dysfunctional oral habits can develop in response to environmental factors such as a diet of soft food, mouth breathing, tongue posture and poor functional habits (incorrect swallow). If uncorrected, these dysfunctional oral habits result in the downward, backward and vertical growth of the maxilla (upper jaw), reducing the space for our teeth and airway. Growth is influenced by both genes and environment, and approximately 80% of jaw growth is completed by age 8. Will your child have room for all their teeth? Room for the tongue?
Our teeth are not too big for our jaws, but rather, our jaws are not growing big enough for our teeth (and tongue).
Poor growth can be corrected at an early age using oral appliances (Orthotropic Biobloc) and myofunctional training to make space for the teeth and correct the posture of the tongue and jaw.
The ideal, final goal is a comfortably closed mouth (lip posture), a balanced lower jaw, and an upper palate wide enough to accommodate the tongue and allow for a sustained, non-obstructed airway, and stable long term tooth position.
Biobloc treatment typically starts at age 6-9, following and supporting a child’s natural growth, and takes 5+ years to reach completion, or until all the adult teeth erupt.
Early growth guidance and habit correction is highly dependent on the individual and results will vary. The Biobloc appliances are technically 'removable', but require excellent compliance. Habit correction supported by myofunctional therapy is also highly individual. This treatment is an 'orthopedic' treatment to influence bone growth, not an 'orthodontic' treatment to straighten teeth.
The Biobloc treatment is not suitable for all children, however, we are happy to support you in your informed decision making. We also feel that no matter the final orthodontic approach for your child, a myofunctional assessment and therapy is beneficial to achieving stable and healthy results.
If you are interested in more information, please contact us. The cost for an orthotropic consult is $200, where we will take measurements, photos, and provide information and a subsequent report with treatment options.

The Tropic Premise:
“The ideal development of the jaws and teeth is dependent on correct oral posture with the tongue resting on the palate, the lips sealed and the teeth in light contact for between four to eight hours a day”
